"WHERE THE CITY ENDS" is a Medium format project that focalize on the new figures of the landscape as peri-urban locations from cities all around the world. "WHERE THE CITY ENDS" represents a question concerning the landscape, the territory and the urban on a global scale. The changes in the peri-urban landscape are part of our world and daily life. Likewise they raise questions of urbanization and fight between man and nature. In front of the chaotic unsightliness of the urban, it doesn’t seem to be possible to subscribe anymore to an ideology of the city as space of conviviality where men fraternize. That way, the subscription to the Utopia of progress and of productivity seems to be compromised. Speaking of the relation between art and contemporary landscape makes evident new relations between society and nature.

The landscape, mediator of our relation to the world, is a critical mirror of the society. The landscape speaks about the respect of the man for the nature, where he has his legitimate place, but where he also leaves his track. The landscape can be thought in terms of harmony and in terms of confrontation. The environmental crisis of the 70s, and the challenge for the protection of the environment nourished the vision of a human occupation contaminating and invasive, breaking the traditional representations between nature and landscape. The affirmation of the ecology reinforces a current of thought of an existential relation between man and nature, denying that way the dualism between nature and society, and imposing an ethical vision of an habitable earth with witch it is necessary to reconcile. What in last instance does not escape from the photographer is the sensation of a domesticated nature, of a constructed landscape. The man shapes the nature for his needs (squandering resource), his desire of comfort (the nature like garden of gratefulness).

Nature stopped existing originally. But it is important not to associate a systematicly pejorative thought with the track left by human being, because the photographer does not do any more than to interrogate the place of man in front of the nature. The process of the nature must integrate the human actions being or not destructives. Describe the nature as something apart, out of the city, where some limits would mark the separation between nature and culture is illusory. Nature and culture are one and the same thing. There is no separation. The photography and the landscape can interact to question all the current subject matters of our contemporary society, like the relation man-nature, the construction of the urban project, the definition of public space, etc. The landscape photography manage to examine actively and, at the same time, to conciliate environmental, social, economic and political problematic. The contemporary art puts in evidence one of the principal characteristics of the landscape : his mediator's function.
